First Student Scholarships

First Student awarded five $2000 scholarships to 2019 graduates of the Mat‐Su Borough School District in 2019.

Scholarship applications for the 2019-20 school year will be available in November 2019 online here and at local high schools.


Alexis Mattson will be graduating from Mat-Su Middle College and will attend University of Alaska – Fairbanks next year. Her goal is to be a pediatric Occupational Therapist that helps children grow their physical abilities, confidence, and self-esteem so they can “grow into who they dream to be.”

Alis JeanneMarie Adams is a Colony High School student. She will be attending the University of Washington in the fall of 2019. She has her sights set on becoming a doctor and wants to provide healthcare and medical support in rural areas.

Antonia Barela is a Mat-Su Central School student that will attend California State University next fall. Her goal is to study music therapy and to provide mental health support for people through music. She endeavors to increase effectiveness of treatment for children with special needs.

Hayden David Hartman will graduate from Palmer High School this year. He will attend Biola University in southern California next year to begin his studies to become a doctor. His goal is to “forward resources to create a better environment for Alaska’s homeless youth and to educate and inspire.”

Julia Safarik is a Palmer High School senior that will be attending Colby College in Maine this fall. Julia’s goal is to be a Pediatric Surgeon so she can provide more healthcare to her community, as well as promote STEM education and career fields to girls.
